1000 Fans . . .

An interesting article that buoys the premise that one artist with 1,000 true fans, each willing to dish out a days salary for your work once a year, should be able to support himself. Just how possible is this and how would I go about doing it? I think the problem with the premise is that one needs to take a considerable amount of time building up this base of True Fans . . . possibly decades.
